Figure Skating Fashion Minute: 2012 US Figure Skating Championships--The Men!!

San Jose Menzzzz!!!!

Galindo Love: US National Champion Rudy Galindo and Nick Verreos, 2012 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships HP Pavilion San Jose California

Last weekend I attended the 2012 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships--the US Nationals--in San Jose California. In my last post on my time there, I talked about my "Nick Figure Skating Costumes Two Cents" of the Ladies Costumes--and now, I'm onto the Men's. But, before I begin my tale on the oh-so-not-exciting Men's Costumes (Guys!!! STEP IT UP!!!), I must share my excitement over meeting two-time U.S. National Champion Rudy Galindo (see photo above). He actually approached me first (I was only 1.2 seconds from approaching him!), and confessed his love of "Project Runway" to me and that he was a "big fan". I returned the praise naturally! Needless to say, this was a big Photo Moment!

I also ran into my Figure Skating "Twitter Buddies", author and photographer Sarah S. Brannen, Drew Meekins, who write the FAB blog "The Inside Edge with Sarah and Drew" for IceNetwork.com. They brought along their friend, Midwestern Sectional Junior Men's Champion Tim Koleto, who actually competed at the 2012 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. He was third after the short program and ended up sixth after the long in the Junior Division. He was so sweet and had the MOST PERFECT eyebrows!! He wins if there were medals in eyebrows!

I also ran into other friends, including Jimmy Nguyen who happened to have his Flip Cam and filmed some fun cheeky videos of us giving some Fashion Skating Fashion Commentary (at the end of this post)...But now, let's get to why you guys are really here reading this: to see my "Two Cents" on the Men's Costumes. So...Here we go:

Gold Medalist Jeremy Abbott--Long Program Costume: For his Gold Medal-winning long program where he skated to "Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3" by Muse, Jeremy wore a costume that was simple, modern and not distracting to the performance. I like the diagonal lines/seaming in the long-sleeved shirt as well as the contrasting matte and iridescent/glittery fabrication. One could argue that on the scale of exciting men's costumes, this might end up on the lower end of that scale. But hey, Jeremy doesn't really do "Glam" "Fabulous" or anything near that, when it comes to his on the ice fashion. When you land an incredible quad like he did, he really doesn't need the costume bells and whistles (although you KNOW I would love it!).

Jeremy Abbott Short Program Costume: His short program costume to "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "Bei Mir Bistu Shein" is one of my favorites of the season. I've gushed HERE about how much I LOVE this look on Jeremy. The suspenders/braces, the high-waisted pinstripe pants, the SPATS...All fashion fab!!!

Silver Medalist Adam Rippon Long Program Costume: twenty-two year-old curly-haired cutie Adam Rippon, captured the Silver Medal at the Prudential 2012 U.S. Figure Skating Championships last weekend. For his Long Program to "Air" and "Tocatta & Fugue" by Johann Sebastian Bach, he wore a nymph-like costume consisting of a long-sleeved nude-colored Ombre-dyed draped top, gathered "cummerbund" waistband piece and brownish-black pants. I think this costume worked well with his skate and music and his very lithe figure (can you say "figure" for men?? Well, I just did!). It had an ethereal quality which was perfect for him and his skating and I loved the draping.

Adam Rippon Short Program Costume: He skated to "Korobushko" by Bond, based on a nineteenth-century Russian folk song about a peddler and a girl...therefore it makes sense Rippon would go all "Russian Fold Dancer" in terms of his costume: a bright red satin "blouse" with waist tie and off-center black-and-gold placket. Although simple and very to-the-point, with it's Russian reference, it worked. In my "Nick fantasy" world, I would have LOVED a BIG OL' FUR HAT to help finish off the look, but A) That may not have been good when he goes up in the air and tries to complete a Triple Axel...and B) He already has a perfect "Head Accessory": his own curly locks!

Coach Style Sidebar:

Ross Miner (right) with one of his coaches, Peter Johansson (left)

Bronze Medalist Ross Miner's coaches are three-time U.S. Figure Skating Championship medalist Mark Mitchell and former Swedish national champion Peter Johansson and I'm fascinated by them--they look like perfect coach "twinsies"--a brunette and blond version!

Coaches Mark Mitchell and Peter Johansson with skater--and pupil--2007 U.S. seventh-place finisher Juliana Cannarozzo

Mitchell and Johansson are always dressed impeccably, perfectly groomed and also boast near-fat free figures. I don't know why, but every time I see them sitting with their skaters, I can sooo easily picture them in Mykonos in Speedos having a lot of fun! But, I digress...
Let's discuss their pupil--and 2012 U.S. Bronze Medalist, Ross Miner:

Bronze Medalist Ross Miner Long Program Costume: For his Long Program to "The Untouchables" by Ennio Morricone, I liked that he wore a head-to-toe costume--as opposed to what most of the male skaters do by just throwing on a same-old, same-old pair of black pants. I LOVE it when a skater dons an entire costume, especially one that works, and this midnight blue-colored ensemble with sequined trim did. What it had to do with "The Untouchables" is beyond me, but it looked modern, elegant and still, had good "costume" factor. It is subtle, yet stylish, just like his coaches.

Ross Miner Short Program Costume: Ross skated to "Para Ti" for his Short program, and this was one of my favorite costumes for the Men's. Yes, he wore those aforementioned skin-tight black pants that have become de rigueur for the male competitors...but his top was EXQUISITE. I loved the interesting seaming--both in the front and back--also, the contrast of the sequined, embroidered fabrication with the black velvet was great. There were elements of 15th Century Spanish Court Costume and yet contemporary skating costume detail as well.

Pewter Medalist Armin Mahbanoozadeh Long Program Costume: Armin skated to "Kill Bill" soundtrack for his Long Program. As we all know, "Kill Bill" heroine, actress Uma Thurman wore that iconic bright yellow catsuit with black stripes down the sides of her sleeves and legs in the film:

Which obviously "inspired" Armin's costume. His was all black with yellow tape on the legs. However, at first glance--if I didn't know what music he was skating to--I would have asked "Why is their CRIME TAPE on his pant legs?". I get the correlation to the film and Thurman's jumpsuit but...it just fell a bit flat for me. I wished (oh how much do I wish!), that he would have gone ALL the way and donned a bright yellow costume with the black trim on the sides. If he was a Russian or Japanese male figure skater, you just KNOW he would have done that! Or at least the reverse and wear a black jumpsuit with yellow trim.

Armin Mahbanoozadeh Short Program Costume: For this, he skated to "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin. The song--as we know--contains distinctive musical patterns of classical Moroccan, Indian and Middle Eastern music. His costume reflected this. Or at least the top did. The interesting patterns on his shirt had Near East influences as well as an "Art Deco" touch. Again, I wish he would have taken it a bit further--maybe included some of that trimmed pattern down the sides of his pants.

Figure Skating Fashion Minute: ISU Grand Prix Final--The Men!!!

A Sequined Un-tied Ascot, Suspender Mania and a Men's Costume Flashback...

Ooooh GURL: Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu reacts with a Macaulay Culkin "Home Alone" look (he's also kind of well, "queening out" as we say in my circles) after his well-done Free Program skate, Grand Prix Final Quebec City Quebec Canada

Historic Quebec City Quebec, Canada

Continuing with my review of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final Costume Review, it's now time for the Men! I am still not over Carolina Kostner's surprise sequined "Debi Thomas/Cats (thanks Sarah Hughes for that reference!)/Donna Summer unitard-jumpsuit" but...I think I can move on--and talk about my boys.

The Top Three: (Left to right) Silver Medal Winner Daisuke Takahashi of Japan, Gold Medalist Patrick Chan of Canada and Javier Fernandez of Spain with his Silver Medal, Grand Prix Final 2011-2012 Quebec City Quebec Canada

The boys at Quebec City's Grand Prix Final 2011-2012 didn't deliver many Costume Surprises (unlike the Ladies), but there was one notable competitor who did do a "Costume Change" for this Grand Prix Final: Japan's Daisuke Takahashi and I wanted to talk about a "Suspender" Theme as well as well, an Homage to a "Costume Blast From the Past". Let's discuss:

Daisuke Takahashi of Japan: Takahashi skated his Free Skate to "Blues for Klook" , a blues-y/jazzy number by French jazz composer Eddy Louiss. And yes, he "changed" his costume, to the one in the photo above and below:

Everything about it seemed the same as his "old" Free Skate costume for this season: a black shirt-and-pant ensemble (yawn) but then he added an extra somethin'-somethin', a gold-and-black beaded Ascot/un-tied scarf that was stitched to the shirt.

This above (and below) is what he had worn throughout this season's Grand Prix, and notice that there was no gold-and-black added piece! So, this could be considered a "Costume Change"--well at least for the Men! Baby Steps for the Men.

Although it wasn't some extraordinary costume upgrade, I do like the change. His previous costume (above) looked a little amateur and had a "happy hands at home....with a bedazzler" feel to it. The new piece added a bit more excitement to what is basically a black ensemble.

Time for a Grand Prix Men's Costume Theme Minute: Suspenders

Jeremy Abbott of the USA: One of my favorite male figure skaters, Jeremy Abbott, donned a suspenders-and-shirt costume for his Grand Prix 2011-2011 Series Short Program skated to "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "Bei Mir Bistu Shein". LOVE the metallic silver braces (suspenders) and the pin-tucked blue-and-black shirt. The suspenders are really the stars of this costume. But then, there is a "Supporting Star" in his costume...

Are those Spats??? Yes, in fact, they are! Figure Skating Spats. Gotta Luv them! Jeremy, you are my new Costume Obsession. He's so early-20th Century Fashion Fab! Moving on...Another Suspender King was...

Javier Fernandez of Spain: Again, for his Short Program to "I Love Paris" and "Petit Fleur", he wore a white dress shirt, tucked-in mustard yellow "Mr Rodgers" cardigan, dark gray pleated (Pleated!!!) pants, and yes, SUSPENDERS. Abbott and now Fernandez...in Men's Figure Skating Costume Terms...it means a TREND has officially emerged! On a separate note: several TV commentators spoke of his skating--and costume--being reminiscent of his coach's "look".

His coach, in case you didn't know, is Brian Orser (seen above with his "star", Spain's Javier Fernandez at one of the Grand Prix 2011-2012 events' "kiss-and-cry"). Orser was a 1984 and 1988 Olympic Silver Medalist and 1981-88 Canadian national champion. In other words: don't mess with him kids!

Speaking of Brian Orser...Time For a Costume Flashback Homage:

Orser Red: Brian Orser, 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics Free Skate Costume

This was Brian Orser--and his Costume back at the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics. Orser skated his Long Program/Free Skate to Shostakovich "Ballet Suite No. 5 from The Bolt" and well, let's just say, he "GAVE IT TO YOU!" in terms of costume. The bright red "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" gold-piping epaulets, gold buttons, the gold leafed sash...

The center front lapped zip flared-leg jumpsuit, the matching RED skate covers: Oh Lord, I think I just had a Figure Skating Costume Heart Attack...but in a good way. I miss those "Good Ol' Days" of Men's Figure Skating Costumes. Can I sign a Costume Petition to BRING BACK the Brian Orser Costume Days!!!! Please??

Figure Skating Fashion Minute: Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia--The Men!

Soccer Balls, Chippendale's Dancers and a Dracula peplum...It's The Men !!!

World Cup...of Skating: Russian Figure Skater Sergei Voronov in a soccer ball-inspired stretch Lycra top and black pants, Rostelecom Cup/Cup of Russia 2011-2012 Season--Keep reading below to see if he made my "Love It" or "Not So Much" of The Men's at Cup of Russia Figure Skating "Fashion Two cents" Review

Over the weekend, the Rostelecom Cup--or Cup of Russia (of figure skating)--happened at the Megasport Arena in Moscow Russia...

Megasport Arena, Moscow Russia

In my last post, I talked about the costumes I somehow missed during this whole 2011-2012 Grand Prix of Figure Skating Season, for The Pairs. Now, I am on to The Men...and the costumes that escaped my well-trained Fashion Designer and Figure Skating Fan "Eye". Shall we get started:

Artur Gachinski of Russia: It seems fitting since it is the Cup of Russia, to begin with a Russian figure skater--and his costume choice. For his Free Skate entitled "The Demon", utilizing music from "Interview With A Vampire", "Bram Stoker's Dracula", as well as "The Red Violin", he wore an all black ensemble featuring beaded applique over the very tight outseam of the pants as well as accents on the top "jacket" section (center front, collar, cuffs).

As he skated (and especially, when doing his turns), I loved how the peplum "flapped" in the wind. I liked this costume: it reflected the music, the theme and still seemed masculine and dark. If I had one critique: I would have liked maybe...some Red! (to signify the blood of the Vampires).

Artur has been dubbed the "new" Evgeni Plushenko (above)! Plushenko was great in mixing a bit of artistry with a lot of the athleticism--and making his "Dorothy Hamill-esque" layered shag move in the wind. And Gachinski does all that. Also, they have the same coach, and many people have commented on the fact that Artur Gachinski is inspired by his movements, and he's pretty much suggested that Plushenko is his Idol. But Plushenko also knew to add some color in his costumes. Take note Artur.

Konstantin Menshov of Russia: Continuing with the Russian boys, it's Konstantin Menshov. Menshov got 8th place (out of eight) at the Rostelecom Cup this weekend and for his Free Skate, he chose to skate to "The Race" by Yellow, Kill Bill's "Battle Without Humanity", and Debussy's "Clair de Lune". His all black jacket and pant look was very Ski Instructor at some FABULOUS--and very exclusive--James Bond-ish Ski Resort in Cortina Italy. It also had the "essence" of Keanu Reeves in "The Matrix". Maybe that should have been his soundtrack. Just sayin...

Andrei Rogozine of Canada: For his Short Program, Moscow, Russia-born (don't ask, it's Figure Skating!) Rogozine skated to "Broken Sorrow" and "Fanfare" by Black Violin. Somehow, I also haven't talked about this young figure skater--and his costumes--in my "Figure Skating Costumes" blogs here. For this skate, he wore a metalized gunmetal-colored above-elbow sleeved shirt featured placket pocket accents and a large Fleur-de-lis applique on the back. I liked the sort of "Western Tex-Mex" aspect of the shirt--even though that had NOTHING to do with the music or program. Also (on a good note), I am usually NOT a fan of the "Wear-a-belt-with-your pants as part of your Grand Prix Costume" but...I liked his big buckled silver one here. However, the overall iridescent look was a bit "Chippendales Las Vegas Goes Line Dancing at a French Club". Go figure.

Sergei Voronov of Russia: For his Free Skate to Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci", Voronov's costume was a bit of a mishmash of a "Sexy Harlequin" Clown/Stripper: his silver-grey and black ensemble has cut-out applique in "Argyle"/diamond shapes, stand-up asymmetrical collar, center front "tears of a clown" in red, and a side-front chest illusion opening that "travels" dangerously near his thigh. There is A LOT here: A) I love that it's "different" but, B) It's very Cirque du Soleil after waaaay too many pre-Dinner Show drinks! It almost made me wish he would have gone this route:

Now, let's finish with Mr. Soccer Ball:

Yes, kids, it's "Mr Pagliacci" Sergei Voronov of Russia and his "Soccer Ball" ensemble. For his Short Program he skated to "The Final Game" by Hans Zimmer. THANK GOODNESS his costume had something to do with the soundtrack to his skate. Well, just a bit--in terms of being a sport-themed look; it's actually from a BASEBALL-themed film "A League of Their Own", which has NOTHING to do with soccer, or a soccer ball for that matter. Why his top is printed like one is yes, beyond me. But...somehow, I still liked it: it was kitschy, "graphic" and definitely caught my "costume eye attention". Soccer or Baseball, it's still kind-of Figure Skating Fashionable...to me!
